I would love to create my own wiki on my site.  A2hosting support pointed me to both phpwiki and tikiwiki, which are currently available.  However, neither has easy enough user experiences for my plans.

Would you consider installing something new, e.g. http://twiki.org/

You may be able to install this software manually on  a shared plan.  Generally we recommend VPS packages for people who would like to install custom software.  Give the install a try on a shared package and submit a ticket with any issues you might run into.  We will let you know if the issues can be solved on a shared hosting plan.
