If i wanted to install some open source programs on my server, how wuld i go about doing that? I attempted to compile via shell but got:

checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

so guessing that we dont have access to compile ourselves

The items I would like to install are:

They are programs for generating barcode images via php (if you couldn't guess) ;-D

Access to compliers is not available on the shared hosting packages, mostly due to the amount of resources compiling programs can use.  If you would like complier access one of our VPS packages would be better suited for your needs.
